USB4.0 2.0 is coming

USB-IF has announced a redefined USB standard: USB4 version 2.0, supporting data communication speeds of up to 80Gbps. the USB4 standard released in September 2019 already transfers at speeds of up to 40Gbps, but the October 2022 USB4 2.0 version pulls straight to the ceiling at 80Gbpps. the latest according to NoteBookCheck , USB-IF is advancing USB PD charging and data transfer, with the latest 240W PD power supply and 80Gbps transfer speed USB4 2.0 cables expected to start rolling out this year.

In October 2022, the USB-IF released the USB4 version 2.0 specification, which enables 80 Gbps transfer performance, and the associated USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) specifications have been updated. Under the USB4 version 2.0 specification, the USB Type-C signal interface can also be configured asymmetrically to deliver up to 120 Gbps in one direction while maintaining 40 Gbps in the other. Currently, many high-end 4K monitors choose to support USB-C one-wire connection to notebooks. 80Gbps bandwidth USB4 2.0 solution is available, and some 4K 144Hz monitors or 6K or 8K monitors can easily connect to notebooks via USB-C one-wire. Regarding the 240W PD 3.1 power supply specification, USB IF expects the 240W PD power supply to be launched in the third quarter of this year. However, according to industry sources, the 140W PD 3.1 EPR solution will not land on notebook products in the short term, and each is currently waiting for a new PD controller. Therefore, it will take more time for the 240W PD 3.1 power solution to land on notebooks.

USB 80Gbps interface extends the USB Type-C port to ensure compatibility with existing USB 4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3. In addition, to match the new standard, it is expected that “80 Gbps USB Type-C cable”, the full-blooded version of the cable supports 80Gbps rate while also supporting 240W 48V/5A charging power (USB PD EPR). The new generation of notebooks launched at the end of this year or next year will hopefully start adapting USB 80Gbps. on the one hand, gaming PCs and monitors that require high power will be able to make better use of graphics performance; on the other hand, external solid-state PCIe can also run full.
